V60 Hybrid diesels - Are they any good?
I currently own a V60 2L D4 Business edition, with approx 140k miles on it mainly from motorway mileage.
I am retiring this year and am considering the V60 Diesel Hybrid to replace it. However, I am confused as to whether the battery receives any charge while driving or is it recharged solely from being plugged in? Has anyone got any advice regarding ownership of a hybrid V60? Are they good or bad? I will not be doing motorway mileage every day in my retirement, but being based in a village, is an electric car with a mere 30 mile range a worthwhile consideration? Any advice is welcome guys. TIA. |

I like mine and this is the 103rd car I've either owned or run.
It does re-charge ('save') as you are driving up to typically 12-15 miles. When plugged in, it's says 30 miles and I typically get 22 miles with no diesel use. With no battery and on a long run, it's standard d5 diesel at 45mpg. The very big plus point is you can plug it in your normal 3 pin plug overnight with no investment in any box, and you have no range anxiety because you have the diesel. Life is a compromise, but I've averaged 70mpg since January, and regularly get over 100mpg in typical 40 mile trips for me. The other big bonuses are that it has 4wd whenever you want it, and you can have 285bhp if you get bored. Works for me, but doesn't work for high miler motorway drivers. On saying that, my worst mpg has been better than the best mpg I had with my Audi 3.0TDi quattro with similar grip and performance... My only genuine complaint is the racket the diesel makes when it cuts in at low speed from cold when you've used up the battery. it's such a glaring contrast, but It's fine once on the go but your D4 is probably quieter low down. I've one on order....but not confirmed....
Think new models are all now petrol, no longer a diesel option, and Volvo have extended the range of all electric power from some 30 miles to some 50 miles. This is not real world but "theoretical", but still an improvement
Why did I choose Hybrid? Over half ( possibly more ) of my journeys are less than 50 mile, so can be completed on cheap battery power, thats a win. My daughter made me realise this when I lambasted her for buying an all electric Mazda with only 125ish mile range. "Dad all my weekly journeys are less than 60 miles I don't need a 300/400 mile range. I go over 125 miles possibly twice a year, I can borrow husbands car ( ICE) I have a ICE, so no range anxiety , that's a win I have AWD if I need it for the 2 days a year when we have snow and the roads have not been gritted, that's a win too. Combined the ICE+ electric gives 350BHP thats another win. Then there is the normal bog standard Volvo benefits, comfort, safety, not a Merc,Audi,BMW, Only the extra price was a "loose" for me, but I keep my cars for years, so the extra is not as great per year when divided by time. Only worry is that the car will arrive and due to component shortages will only be half completed.. Cheers Bob |

You also get a stack of torque with the diesel hybrid especially when the dealer Has added Polestar. From memory 630Nm (470lbft), whereas the petrol is 295lbft.
Depends what you can afford - mine was originally a £50k car that I bought for £20k with less than 30,000 miles on the clock. A demo mileage V60 with the quicker 340ps petrol engine is about £45k. Last edited by Ulrikas PA; Apr 26th, 2022 at 19:55. |
