Hi Everyone
I've bought 3 new belts along with their tensioners and guide pulleys. They are for a Volvo V70 D5 2.4L Diesel 2014 reg. I've already got the auxiliary belt off ie. the one which requires a T60 torx to slacken the tensioner off while slipping the belt off. Behined the auxiliary belt there is another very short belt I think it's for the power steering pump. Does anyone know how to get it off, I'm assuming the must be some way to tension/slacken the belt off for replacement purposes. I've tried looking for a youtube video but all I can seem to find are ones about removing/replacing the timing belts or they are not the same model car as mine. Can anyone post a picture of what the adjuster looks like or better still a link to a video. My thanks to anyone who can help Clive |

It’s for the air conditioning compressor and as said it’s a stretch/single use belt. Easiest way to get it off is to cut it… as said there is a special tool to refit the new one but it is possible to do it by hand - load it fully onto the idler pulley and as best you can on the ac pulley then turn the idler to pull it fully on that one. Also as said above you can do it by turning the engine on the crankshaft nut but you must loosely install the stretch belt an the idler only and then refit the main belt over it to be able to do that.
This chap uses a tie wrap to help but it can be done without….. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/v3uLWgoExzU But of course it is always best and easier to have the correct tool - copies of the Volvo tool and other variations that will work are very cheap on eBay (some variations at >£10) too many failed attempts doing it without the tool may mean it’s overstretched and slips.

Getting it off is easy, cut it.
Getting the new one back on is the tricky part, I might face that challenge soon aswell on my V60. Here's the video you're looking for, it's in Swedish, but you can use English subtitles. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imv1uc8ocWQ |

The second picture you posted is of the air conditioning compressor. The bolt shown has nothing to do with the tension or the belt, so leave that well alone. ![]()

Just to agree with the other posters, it’s a stretch belt. I replaced mine by hand without any special tools but remember it being tricky!
There are a few photos on post #19 on my thread here and reference to some swearing… https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=302878 Good luck with it ![]()

Thanks for your replies guys,
No belt adjustment what a brilliant piece of engineering, it’s as bad as having tapped holes into aluminium then proceeding to Loctite the screws in. For anyone else who reads this thread, I fitted the belt on by feeding it over the upper pulley first and then tried to wind it on over the aircon pulley/clutch. I got it on between the 6 o’clock and 9 o’clock position but just didn’t have the strength to wind it on any further, but as the belt was sort of on both the pulley and clutch of the aircon, I decided to try and turn the nut which is in the middle of the clutch with a socket and call it a fluke if you like, but it went on. Needless to say I didn't pull it back off to test if it was a fluke ![]() |

Hi!
Hijacking this thread with an issue of mine if that's okay. We have the same car over here and I can't figure this thing out. They brought the car in after the belt has snapped. We've replaced both belts, but the inner AC/PS stretch belt is quite loose. The old one was a 5PK628, every source says that this length is the correct one, but it's still loose. Tried it just to see what's up, not too surprisingly the belt is slipping and screaming once the AC is turned on. And of course, we're using a stretch belt. Checked the pulleys, they're all factory ones, so it's not that they're replaced with bad ones with smaller diameter. Honestly I can't figure out where the issue lies, why the belt is loose. It's weird. Checked all kinds of sources, cross-referenced part numbers, etc... and yet something is out of place. Does anyone have an idea maybe? |
