Default Glow Plugs

Guys, no doubt this has been talked about in the past but it's been difficult finding information so here goes:

For the D3 (163) EuroCarParts gives me two options, one more expensive than the other and that's it, little to no information on the differences. I tried Autodoc and it turns out the difference is metal vs ceramic tip (or Duraterm vs Duraspeed, see page 3 for deails). Autodoc says metal tip for the D5204T2 (which is what I have) and ceramic tip for the D5204T3.

Question: do we know if Volvo "upgraded" to the ceramic option even for the T2? If not I'll stick with the classic metal tip.

NOTE: another difference between metal vs ceramic are the voltages (4.4V vs 7V)

UPDATE: Did some more thinking and pretty sure I needed the 4.4V version (aka 144) so bought a set from Opie Oils.

No penetrating fluid used, instead after a drive to the woods for a nice walk with the doggo I got to work while the engine was still hot. They came out easily but the fuel rail was in the way of my slightly too girthy socket. Managed to just about do it by unbolting the fuel rail and "flexing it" to slide the socket onto the plugs.

They were all ~1.9ohms except for plug 2 which was ~19ohms. However, I think the reason I was getting glow plug related error codes was because the existing plugs were 7V versions when they should be 4.4V; cowboy mechanics! Anyway, new plugs are in and no more error codes. The ultimate test should come soon when temperatures drop below 5 Celsius.

I changed mine recently. According to VIDA, Autodoc and everywhere I searched, the earlier D3/D4 2 litre engines all had the 4.4V glow plugs - up until 2013. And my car was built in 2011. I bought some from Bosch in Germany direct, so expected them to be the right ones. ...

When I removed the old ones they were the 7V versions. I have fitted the new "correct" ones and all OK so far, though I think they take a fraction longer to warm up. I'm now worried in case I have fitted the wrong ones! If a previous owner fitted the wrong (i.e 7V) ones at some point, then it still seemed to start just fine.

Confused.

I wouldn't worry about it. So long as the car cranks fine, I'd just leave them as they are. If VIDA says 4.4v, that won't be wrong.

It sounds like they've been changed in the past, i.e. They should be 4.4v, but you removed them and they were 7v. I've never heard of a 7v glow plug in a 2011 car. Later models than yours did, but in your case, that doesn't matter.

I notice your signature says "D3/D4", which is it? Just out of curiosity.

It came badged D3, with 163bhp, but has been tweaked up to 180bhp and rebadged D4 to match (similar power to a Polestar upgrade would have been - if they ever did one. V50s, etc., could be bought with a 177bhp D4 version of exactly the same engine, but it was never available on a V70). Volvo reduced the power on the D3 engine to 150bhp from 2102, offering a Polestar upgrade back to 163bhp - i.e. back to the same as used to be the standard output, but you had to pay more for it... Naughty!

I call it a D3/4 because that's how it comes up when you use Autodoc and similar. Because there were two identical engines available, at the same time, in different models, with the same power output, but badged both D3 and D4. Volvo really messed with everyone's minds when they used the D3 and D4 descriptors...!

Me too, and slightly surprised and at the same time not because the service history for mine was done by some random mechanic in Surrey and not Volvo.

How come you changed yours? I changed mine because I had glow plug related error codes, and in cold weather it was a tad rough on start for a few seconds. All resolved with 4.4V plugs
