Smile is this worh checkin for d5 owners

i recently found a youtube vid which showed the harmonic crankshaft balance pully had parted and the outer part detatched from the center part . it may be worth all d5 owners just to check the pully on thier cars as this kind of failiure could mean total destruction of the engine . im going to check mine now.....not sure how common this is but its worth lookin at if you have high miles on your engine.

Ours disintegrated on the A5 near Corwen. We were lucky and got away with a new belt and pulley. It is, I believe, a service item.

Always worth checking Simmy especially if there's none to little disassembly to do so.

I think you'd also get some sort of early report back from the clutch pedal when pulling away as well.

What mileage were you on when that happened Joe?.

I've replaced all the pulleys bar that one and I'm currently approaching 170K.

I saw possibly the same video on utube. You assume the pulley is solid, but it's not and it's composed of some compliant material/rubber.

I've been giving it a good tug on a regular basis ever since.

I've been advocating a check on this pulley for some time whenever anyone requests help locating the cause of chirping noises from the auxiliary belt area. Fortunately, when mine finally failed many years ago I had just stopped the engine having arrived home and I had no secondary damage. Biggest problem was getting the crank pulley nut undone.
This can sometimes be checked by seeing if the crank and all the auxiliary belt pulleys are in the same plane when the engine is running. Needless to say, if the crank pulley is out of alignment stop using the car immediately!

Sadly I deleted the service records to this car but from memory I think it should be checked/replaced every 100k miles and ours failed at somewhere around the 200k mark. Went racing off down the A5 leaving us in a tight layby with two young boys and a long trip back home in a breakdown truck.
