Default Anyone that can help near Newbury?

Hi all, as some of you may know I am looking for a high mielage XC90 (aswell as selling my V50). Yesterday I viewed one that seems solid mechanically, '04 plate with 125k, very good service history with receipts and details of work done which all looks genuine. The car drives very well and I have checked out all the things that seem to be common problems and all seems fine. However, I do not know enough about engines to be able to tell if all is as well as it seems. How would I know if the turbo or intercooler are on their way out? It started well, drove well, handled well, etc etc, the AWD seems to work (turned off traction control on a dusty track and floored it) etc. I am tempted to make an offer but would really like someone to give a thorough check, I am loathe to pay AA or RAC as have heard their checks can be abit hit and miss. I am happy to pay a trustworthy mechanic or local garage for their time to check it over with an experts eye. So are any of you mechanically gifted and close to Newbury (where the car is) or know of a good and reputable garage near there?

Get the reg plate and ring Fawcetts at Newbury; they'll tell you if they've seen the car and what's been done on it. Alternatively ask them to do a check over on it for?

Would it not be better to call the company who has stamped the service book to ask about the history?

Fawcetts can access the central Volvo system which as long as it's been main dealer serviced will tell you who serviced it when; ie has it got dodgy stamps or genuine stamps...

Also if you're buying one in Newbury area then it's most likely to have been serviced by them if it's been in the main dealer network, unless it's got to Basingstoke, Reading or Wantage for servicing.

Good point. Its been serviced by a volvo 'specialist' not a main dealer, all very genuine looking printed out receipts on headed paper with lists of work done with credit card receipts stapled on, and corresponding stamps in the book. I didnt make a note of the specialist though, which was silly of me, Ill call the trader on Monday and ask for the name. Everything seems to be done, cambelt and tensioners, brake shoes, discs and pads recently, filter changes, etc. The oil looked clean, the ATF fluid was red and didnt smell. The last service was at 122000 and its now at 125000, I suppose im more concerned about anything that may have happened since the previous service, you know, a pending problem that the owner suspected or knew about so traded it in. Just be good to get someone know knows what they're doing to check it over. Will ask the Volvo garage if one of their mechanics can check it over perhaps, if the trader will let me take it in! It's Duncan Taylor, Taylors of Newbury, if you've heard anything of him, good or bad!?

I've not been based in Newbury for 5 1/2 years now, so I'm out of touch as to who the traders are.

Sounds legit in terms of the history, but I'd also see if there were any Technical Service Bulletins that may have been missed through being out of the dealer network.

Volvo do actually have quite a good service for older cars that keep them in the network, I used to use it on my V70 before going to Australia. Think it was Essentials or something.
