XC60 D5 20012 back on road after 4 month but limp mode !
hi
After 4 month off the road due to crash my wife Volvo is back on the road D5 215 powerful horses, 2012 year, automatic. Unfortunatelly the car goes after 2-3 minutes into limp mode which gets us puzzled and frustrated. I got myself done basic vida checks but i can only see the old errors but nothing conclusive. What could be the reason for limp mode after long time off the road? My suspiction is that variable angle turbocharger got possibly stuck. The car makes from time to time weird noices of hissing air passing somewhere (no obvious leaks as already checked in the garage). It sounds as if some bus was driving past releasing air but this happens occastionaly. If it was your car how would you go about fixing it on the budget? My ideas and parts of the plan are: 1 get turbo out (are there 2 turbos) by some turbo specialist and get it cleaned inside out 2 Is proffessional vida somehow magically more powerful for the older cars? if i cannot see the specific error even professional will not see it - is it right? 3 Are there any typical known issues with turbo control like pressure valve etc. 4 The car does not lack power when not it limp and was able to accellerate fast several time and then slowed down before going to limp very soon after Any ideas very welcome. This forum has always been great Regards Last edited by hewking; Aug 27th, 2023 at 13:04. |

Can't see how a car can go into limp mode without generating dtc information.
Limp mode is a protective state enabled by the ECU based on data from sensors. So there must be data to read unless you have a major comms fault or ECU failure. After a lay up it's often worth changing some cheap easy and basic stuff regardless, such as fuel and fuel filter, air filter, oil & oil filter, battery etc. However, turbo removal is a big step without having a clue about the cause of the problem. I'd try a bit harder to read the data first. Have you tried real time sensor interrogation/recording whilst driving it with the problem present? You can do this with the cheapest of ODB apps so if you have VIDA should be possible to do. |

Just soot filter blocked error
Can i trigger regen on idle for dpf regeneration? When i drive the car can go into limp mode again and then reg of dpf could be cancelled - is it right? |

Stick a really good dose of redex (or similar) through it, should give the injectors a wee clean.
Do an oil AND filter change, run for a bit then repeat to just get all that clag out.. Does it get up to temperature before going into limp mode? Any small holes in the intercooler? Do a smoke test to find them...
