D5 rumble - engine mounts or?
Hi folks,
engine mounts? I've a 2008 XC70 D5 manual with around 270K KM on the clock. it drives very well but, I've a few niggles to resolve including a noticeable D5 "rumble". I don't mean the normal characterful 5 pot thrum (which I really like), nor the typical diesel 'clatter' but, a heavier pronounced engine speed related 'rumble' with a (just) perceptible vibration. I am pretty sure it's NOT the drivetrain - I think it's engine mount(s). I think this as the rumble is related to engine speed not road speed. EG it slows to tick-over when I depress the clutch and coast (when at speed on the road). It does not sound like a DMF 'clank' either (do these have a DMF - I guess they do!). I also 'occasionally' hear a slight clonk (if windows down) when starting engine or doing a hill start (when the torque loads up) - and sometimes over speed bumps (if I hit them a bit too fast). It's not a nasty bang but, I can tell it will become one if I don't fix it.... The easy to see (and replace) top mount looks conspicuously new (I think that handles most of the torque) and the engine cannot be rocked back and forth by hand at all - even with a gentle levering... So, I'm thinking it'll be the others, the ones under the engine and gearbox (which take the weight) that will need replacing. Before I "invest" several hundred quid in engine mounts (and carry them in hold baggage on a flight etc etc) - can anyone confirm my thinking - that it is likely to be the engine mounts? E.G. is it common for the mounts to go soft at this age and near 200K Miles? (or, like some BMWs do they have vacuum 'operated' engine mounts with solenoid valves with lots of pipes and joints that can leak air and etc etc? or some other such system that can fail?). NB Unfortunately, i'm not able to access the car for a month or so - I'm just pre-preparing at this point. Thanks in advance! |

At that mileage, the mounts are probably well past their best.
