Hi All,
I have a 2001 XC70 - in the last couple of days i have noticed smoke appearing from under the drivers side of the bonnet when i am stationary. There is not a vast amount of it and revving the engine does not increase the amount of smoke. I suspect that it is oil being burnt -it smells of 'hot engine'. All engine temperatures are ok and no oil warning light has come on. I don't know whether it only does it at idle - it could be that the smoke is there all the time but i don't see it when moving. I have opened the bonnet to try to see where the smoke comes from and it seems its the lower end on the driver's side. Does anyone have any thoughts/ideas? Thought i'd try here before going anywhere near the Volvo dealer - had a very expensive and unsatisfactory experience with them recently. Cheers Paul |

I would take a punt and say it's the coolant cap venting off. Get a new cap (about £10 from Volvo) If it still does it then get the coolant checked/sniffed for exhaust gases which could point to a head gasket problem.

Was it apparent, when looking, which union / injector it was? (there's one per cylinder, isn't there?) |

Petrol or diesel? If petrol it could be PCV issue, or if diesel it could be injector leak. Remove the plastic engine cover & look for the pool of diesel that accompanies this problem.

Will it leave evidence, in case a couple of days have gone by? Or will a hot engine burn it off and leave little clue? Won't get chance, probably during the week to look at it, will probably get time over the weekend. |

If it's a leak around the injectors, it wont burn off as it does not get hot enough. My previous D5 used leak a bit here and you clearly see a puddle of oily fuel on top of the alloy rocker cover.
