Smoking D5 only when hot
I have a 2007 S60 D5 that I have been doing some work on
Even though its been sitting in my drive for a couple of months going no where it has started first time and run with no issues and most importantly until now no smoking Due to a bit of stupidity on my part while I was running it up to normal; temperature I decided to top up the oil which was a bit low I added the litre or so oil the engine needed while it was running ( yes now I know that's a stupid idea) Engine took the oil without complaint but when the engine got up to temperature it started giving out loads of white smoke The smoke is white but doesn't disperse very quickly if I wipe around the end of the tailpipe after wards I can find traces of clean engine oil so it appears that the engine oil must have gone into the intake somehow Does anyone have suggestions on where to start looking to clean out the oil from? thanks and yes I do know I was daft to do it while running |

Where is the oil level on the dipstick? Your D5 has a DPF and shouldn't be overfilled. You may have overfilled it. Drain some out to ensure that the level is no more than ~3/4 the way up the marking on the dipstick (or something like that, someone will be along shortly to confirm the level, no doubt).

3/4 or 75% on the dipstick for Dpf

Drain it off to the correct level and take it for a drive, motorway would
Be best where you could leave it in 5th and get it good And hot to burn any excess

Can't take it for a drive legally as it isn't mot'd at present
I was getting ready for mot when I made my **** up I assume that there will be puddles of oil in the wrong places in these engines intakes I will be taking as the intake hoses off to clean them but I worry that neat oil has got into my new dpf and ruined it Is there a way to clean the dpf if it has got oil in it? I have a Vida unit so old run the dpf regeneration but last time the test ran the engine at 2000 rpm for an hour before I gave up on the regeneration That was before I pound that the old dpf was completely stuffed though How long should a static regeneration take to run? |

I recently witnessed a guy removing a dpf from a BMW, steeping it in warm water and industrial floor cleaner for 3 hours, then power washing it clean. Worked a treat and it hasn't given any bother since. I'm not suggesting this, but it did work.

The only way to clean them is with heat at gas flow! The dpf is made up of hundreds of right angle bends to trap soot. I wouldn't do anything with it when it's legal drive it get it hot and it will clean it self out.
