Diagnostic vs DICE purchase - XC90 low pressure diesel faul
Hi All,
Long time lurker here. I ran into some problems on the trusty old 2005 series 1 XC90 recently. It was running fine and had just returned nearly 60mpg on a gentle run to Rugby and back recently. A couple of days later the engine went into limp mode with the red triangle engine fault on the dash. This was after running faultlessly to Ludlow on a 200mile round trip, 5 miles from home up a steep hill it died. Put my bluetooth OBD reader on it and uncovered a range of faults that seemed to point at a MAF issue. Got some cleaner and gave it a good spray. Fixed! Or so I thought. A week and half later, the same fault occurred, this time on a downhill run of Llanberis pass by Snowdon. This time similar faults a showing up plus high and low fuel system errors, leak detected errors and a few others all related to similar issues. Thnking I needed a new MAF since cleaning it had had such a good result last time, I ordered a cheapy one (possible mistake I now realise). Fitted it, no improvement. However the one consistent fault code is low fuel rail pressure P0087. I had the RAC get me home this time, they put their diagnostics on it and suggested that the low pressure tank fuel pump may be to blame. Now, this is possible since I know the tank is full of crud. A year ealier, the missus ran the fuel tank down too far and filled the fuel filter with so much crap that the car died (on a hill again funnily enough). I replaced the filter and fixed the problem. Also of note, I replaced it again last month as part of a general oil service. So good sirs, has anyone suffered similar issues that were resolved by fixing/cleaning the tank fuel pump? Also, I really could do with getting a proper VIDA diagnostic of the car before I go faffing about under the rear seats. I'm toying with getting a DICE tool and doing it myself as it seems to be about the same price as paying a Volvo specialist to do it once. Any thoughts on this? Final question, can you recommend a good specialist near Northwich? Thanks in advance. |

Update
Hello again. Following posting the above I decided to go take a look at the car again. Well, it started perfectly and ticked over as it should. I gave it a bit of a rev once it warmed for a while and still everything seemed fine, no engine light or stalling. The same fault code as before was still stored.
So, I took it for a little drive (5 miles or so), gave it plenty of acceleration (to try to trigger the problem). Absolutely nothing went wrong. Stopped, cleared the fault codes, drove home. This time no fault codes came up, completely clear. Now what? I'm wondering about the fuel pick up pipes in the tank, do they have a gauze over the end? Is it possible that I have a blockage in there of some kind. When I parked it up 4 days ago, the engine light was still on and in limp mode. Any thoughts? |

I have plenty of tested and working Dice available as well as laptops already loaded with the software should you not have a suitable one.
£100 for the Dice and software on its own or an additional £145 for a good quality, good condition laptop. If all you want is a code read, I can do that for nothing and there are a couple of members around you who have the same setup purchased from me.

Conked again
Took another drive with the full Torque pro running. Ran fine for a while (5 miles) got home, fiddled with toeque pro, went round the block and it conked. Showing a fuel leak code on the monitor now. I noticed a drop in fuel rail pressure when the engine light came on.
Weird. Ooh just spotted your reply CRed. Will get back to you on this later. Would be very grateful for a diagnostic. |

Temporary fuel pipe blockage?
Air in the fuel line?

Code read
Hi Cheshired, shall I send you a DM? I'd like to see what Vida can give me that would help diagnose this. I have a feeling that it's something either like a fuel pipe block as suggested by SwissXC90 or some bizarre obscure bit of circuit board that's giving up the ghost somewhere (I had to have the CEM resoldered last year).
Let me know, thanks. |

How much fuel is actually in the tank now on the gauge?
