Default V60 upgrades

Hi all

Had my 2015 V0 D4 for a year and a half, its on 162k, now needs a new clutch, alternator, timing belt, and front disks and pads, so thats around £2200, and at first I was like, ****, I only aid 4500 for it, but then I realised, its been 100% reliable the entire time Ive had it, and the 35k miles Ive added to it, absolutely everything works on it, so instead of going out and getting something else, I decided it was worth spending the money on.

Now, there are 4 things I dont like about it that I hope I can change, 2 anyway.

1. 16" wheels look real stupid on it, will any volvo 17" fit without any issues?
2. The stereo is good but Id like a slightly better amp, can I just do a swap out for a better volvo one with no issues?
3. Thios car eats oil, around 0.5L every 2-3k miles, but its not smoking, no oil leaks anywhere? What gives?
4. The seats are cloth, and the drivers seat is faded black, any way to bring it back to black at all?

Older Volvo wheels have a slightly larger centre bore, so you'd then need spigot rings. Best to just get wheels off a P3 model that'll also have the correct offset, etc.

High oil consumption on these is due to the drain holes for the piston oil control rings getting blocked. Later engines had modified pistons/rings. You won't see it smoking because the DPF will filter it out!

You can safe a pretty penny if you do the discs and pads yourself.

1. Plenty of 17" wheels from similar age V60s on ebay
2. Aftermarket amp would be easier, a few posts on the internet but not a lot
3. Can't help sorry
4. Second hand leather interior?

1. Probably loads of 17" (and also 18") wheels on ebay and suchlike. just find a brochure for your model year and see what wheels were available. Just be aware that going from 16" to 18" may mean a harsher ride and brakes may look tiny in the massive wheels.

2. there are posts around about this, not a common thing and as the audio is quite locked down i think so not as simple as plugging in an amp in. Maybe different speakers, but in honesty adding a sub would probably be the most effective and easiest method to add some missing noise.

3. Dunno

4. there will be, but unlikely to be easy or cheap and last unless you get a professional place to do it. You could look at buying replacment covers or seats?

probably worth looking at other forums, so swede speed and suchlike as they may have more modding info.

1: 18 inch was an option so that´s no problem
2. Don´t know
3. They upgraded the piston rings sometime in 2017 so i guess that´s the problem.
4. Get black leather seats from the junkyard.

1. Larger wheels might affect the rolling radius, thus affecting speedometer accuracy. Others can probably advise regarding whether any changes need to be made to steering components to ensure that the larger wheels are fully catered for. It might, for instance, be necessary to reduce the angle of full lock.

2. Cloth seats suggest that you probably have a Business Edition with the lower grade 25W/channel Performance sound system. The better-sounding High Performance sound system is normally only found in higher trim levels such as SE and SE Lux.

3. The oil consumption is likely to get worse over time (my wife's 2015 V60 D3 now uses half a litre every 500 miles) and a proper fix will cost thousands as it normally involves a partial rebuild of the engine.

IMHO, spending a lot of money on upgrading a high mileage example in basic trim that's beginning to exhibit high oil consumption might not be the best investment. (Sorry.)

Well looked after Volvos last a really long time. My first Volvo (a 1998 V70) is still on the road after 23 years. Have you therefore considered buying an older but better-equipped and lower mileage V60 D5 instead. This might prove to be a better use of your funds. Firstly, the D5 doesn't have the oil consumption issue. Secondly, a higher trim level will address your issues regarding wheels, upholstery, and (probably) sound system.

If you want to do upgrades yourself, however, then perhaps just find a better example than what you have as your starting point.

That oil consumption isn't too bad yet. One thing we tried recently on an audi 1.8 tfsi (horrible engines) is put really thick racing oil 10W-60. The car used to eat through a 1l oil every 300km, now the distance is almost double since we switched from 10w-40. obviously its not a long term solution, but something you could probably try, just not 10w-60 outright, cause i assume you're running 0w-20 now

In this case where the higher oil consumption is due to oil failing to run back down from the oil control ring, then higher viscosity oil would only make the consumption worse.
