Post V40 XC 2015 power steering rack

Good afternoon, I have just been informed by Volvo that the bearings on the power steering rack on my V40 XC 2015 have worn out, this is after 41,000 miles. I would appriciate your thoughts on this matter. Have been quoted a cost from the main dealer I purchased the vehicle from at around £1300 for the repair, however after a limited amount of back and fore with the main dealer and Volvo they will reduce this by 50%.

Why am I still not accepting of this? My thought is that this is not an issue I would expect to be dealing with on a vehicle of volvo's quality, a vehicle that is less than 5 years old and only has 41,000 miles on the clock, along with a service history. Should I accept this or keep asking questions?

I would really appriciate your opinions. Thank you.

I appreciate your frustration but fear you will get nowhere and the offer on the table is probably the best you will see..

Volvo now deem themselves a premium brand, this is certainly reflected in their prices never mind the quality.

Look around the motor factors, I find in dependants are better, for a rack and you will find an item far cheaper. On the V70 it is a labour intensite job as the rear of the engine cradle has to drop to get the rack out and in but any competent garage can do it.

As an example of volvo rip off pricing, my xc70 needed a new cv joint on the front ns shaft, at 80,000 miles, volvo only do shafts and their 12 month 12,000 mile garentee rebuilt shaft was priced at £820 Inc vat just to buy.

I bought from my local independent motor factor a shaftec 24 month 24,000 mile garentee shaft for £180 Inc vat and after the returnable surcharge of £18 was recovered when I gave the old shaft back to the motor factors. I changed the shaft myself in an hour and a half thus saving myself £720 on the volvo price for the job.

I do have annual service at volvo dealer so that any electronic updates are installed, otherwise they seldom see the car and certainly not for mechanical work.

Paul..
