Starting fuel issue
HI guys
im having an issue starting my 240GL.its a carb one, it doesnt seem to be getting fuel. im suspecting either the fuel pump or the mechanical fuel pump i used a stock image someone sent me of where to check. I tested it by pulling the pipe off the carburettor and putting it into a jar, remove the lead to the coil so there is no spark and someone operate the ignition switch, no petrol came spurting out into the jar. i check the fuses and they seemed ok and even attached some jumper to another car to give the car more juice to start. i found access to the fuel pump via the boot if i need a fuel pump where is best place to get and what type ? the car almost starts on quikstart but no fuel is coming through im currently charging my battery at the moment |

The fuel pump won’t do much until the engine is idling- it’s spinning too slowly on the starter to pump fuel.
Will the engine start using a can of easy start? If it will, then the pump will start spinning fast enough to pump fuel. If the engine starts on a can of easy start and the pump still doesn’t pump fuel then it probably needs replacement. There is only one fuel pump on your car, the one on the side of the engine. There is an electric pump in the tank in later cars, but not in yours. Cheers |

Stupid question: if your engine is the one shown in the third photograph, is the in-line fuel connected the right way round?
The electrical connections in photo 2 are for the fuel sender unit.

How long since the car ran? The fuel can drain back if left long enough.
It can sometimes air lock. You could try blowing through the line going from the tank and listen for bubbling.(there could be an obstruction.) Its a mechanical pump and as has been said previously the cam that operates it needs to run at a certain speed.

After thought. Or did you mean the filter? Judging by the cobwebs, I suspect it has been sitting a while!

hi
yes id not started in for 3-5 months. i know i should have popped out and started it more often. i disconnected the hose in front of the inline fuel thing and tried to see if any fuel came out nothing,as previously mentioned and yes the inline fuel thing is empty and not getting fuel to it.as per the picture attached now. ah ok thanks for info on the fuel sender unit. yes the engine tried to kick in on easy start, but doesnt get enough to fully start. will have to check for a block and if not maybe a new pump thanks for all your replies |

Probably just needs more easy start, if it was working before.
Where are you in London? Cheers |

I'd already told you that you don't have a pump in the tank, the wires running to it are for the fuel gauge sender and nothing else. Don't waste time with that. I agree with Alf above that the fuel filter looks like it is back to front - the filter element goes downstream (nearest the carburettor). Check this first (because it is free and easy). It probably won't cause the issue, but it won't help if the pump is failing. The pump in your last photo looks pretty old and crappy, that will probably be the root cause - it it isn't working no amount of quick start and cranking the motor will make it run. Test it like I told you (with the filter the right way round, or even better with it temporarily removed to eliminate it as an issue), and if it doesn't work just replace it. The pumps are the same for all carburettor models and are cheap, Brookhouse Volvo sells them for £36: https://www.classicvolvoparts.co.uk/...LOCK+463391%2E ... I'd also told you that previously. The fuel system on your motor car is really simple; just be methodical.
