Default Rear tyre- Driver's side

This tyre was changed last August and now the wires are coming through again. As well as a new tyre (!) - what do I need to ask for (Fix wise) at the garage please?

You need to go and get a full alignment check & rectification from a garage with decent kit (Hunter, typically)

Why did you need to change this tyre last August, 'Madmook', and how many miles have you done since? Same wear pattern? In isolation, or as 1 of 2, or 4? Have the other 3 worn abnormally, or just this wheel?

Did you slide and whack a curb last winter, or maybe hit a particularly bad pot hole? There may be something bent or damaged that requires attention. Agree on the alignment check, but you need to get to the bottom of this before you lose another tyre.

Is the car a recent used purchase about which you may not know the full history? Perish the thought, but is it possible that the car may have been involved in an accident prior to your ownership and something is bent or damaged? Have the alignment checked by all means, but I think that you may need to look beyond that to identify the problem (if problem there is) that is causing this abnormal wear.

Hope you get to the bottom of this.

Regards, John.

Default Tyre Reply

Unsure how to reply- I'm getting it checked at Kwikfit today. Probably only done less than 2500 miles since last August. Other tyres seem OK. The pot holes in Swansea are absolutely terrible plus we have many speed bumps.

Daft query but wouldn't an MOT (last OCTOBER) pick up issues?

Not daft at all. That would suggest to me that all was well as regards tyre wear and condition at the time of the MOT, and point to something that happened over winter causing the trouble.

The MOT would only look at the tyres from a 'legal to use' standpoint, so may not pick up on abnormal wear until it became more apparent. It should also pick up on worn bushes and worn, rusty or damaged components, etc., (if severe enough to affect safety). It doesn't explain why you needed to change the tyre last August?

Nothing against Kwikfit or any other tyre supplier for that matter, but I would feel more comfortable in having the car checked by a good 'Indie' if you happen to have one in your area?

Regards, John.

Default Alignment

I booked into Kwikfit as they had the Hunter alignment system suggested. Results attached. They couldn't adjust the caster so I'll need to get that done elsewhere, already feels much better to drive.

Why is a tyre thread in the diesel sub-forum?
