Default S60 2ltr petrol 2003 automatic fuel gauge misread

Morning all. Not really a problem, more of a niggle but the fuel gauge on the dash gives a misreading. Basically when the car is empty of fuel it shows quarter of a tank left on the needle and when I totally fill the tank up it stays at the full mark for quite a while then slowly drops down. I brought the car like this and the previous own said that the quarter tank mark was when to fill up as he had not got round to getting it fixed. As I say not really a problem but I do like my cars to work correct. Am I correct in thinking first port of call would be to replace the fuel sender sensors under the rear seats. Many thanks for any help.

Close. You first port of call would be to check out the transfer plumbing between the tank 'saddles' . If it's not working properly there can be lots of fuel on the side the pump isn't. This is a very common issue and many owners treat 1/4 as empty as it can be, effectively. Some cars will refuse to start at or below 1/4 unless pointing uphill or downhill etc etc.

Hi there, many thanks for your help earlier. Is there anything in particular I should be looking out for on the tank transfer. I have not looked at it on the car yet, just trying to go in with as much info as I can. Many thanks Andy

If the above checks fine, you may check if the sender unit moves easily. In a car with the metal tank model, it looks like this. The pump opening looks like this. There is a cover over the tank opening which varies, on some models a special key is needed, on mine it was a metal cover which I could punch open with a screw driver.
