From what I have seen online over in the states it’s a common issue. Turbos, pistons and rings. Could be worth having a google. Oil consumption over here has been seen on diesel models not heard much about the petrols here. Probably more diesels sold. I assume your XC90 is the 2nd gen with the 4 cylinder.

1 litre per 1000 miles is acceptable.

Isn't it indicative of a growing problem.

4L of oil in 3 months isn't acceptable though. Something is wrong.

My guess is its related to the VEA engine (assuming it has one), possible piston rings. The OP said there's no leaks, so that means its burning it. As Graham says, that's more common on the diesel's though.

Drive down a long hill with an immediate incline at the bottom. When you reach the bottom, give it flat-out up the other side. Are you seeing blue smoke?

But only because petrol VEA engines are rare.

In the USA, it's a massive problem with early petrol VEA engines, and Volvo has fixed a lot of these at its own cost, but has also chosen not to make any such offer to UK buyers.

Okay, that's good to know.

If its related to the piston rings, that won't be a cheap fix with today's prices I wouldn't think???

Depends on whether you can do it yourself.
