Default Replacing Wastegate

Following on from this thread

http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showth...ight=wastegate

I have done what was said in that thread, but its still rattling. I don't want to adjust it anymore as I have already done a full turn, and don't want to risk damaging the engine/turbo etc.

So my next thourght is to replace the wastegate, I've found this one on ebay but its coming from japan and dont know if its any good

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Turbo-Actu...item19d04392c9

Also it says in the description says that its a 0.6bar (8.8PSI) but others are available, but thats abit confusing to me being new to owning a turbo car

So has anyone got any thourghts on this wastegate or know anywhere else I can get one cheap?

Final question, is there any sort of upgraded wastegate available?

The pressure it states is the spring pressure ie the mimumum pressure the turbo would make, if you didn't connect the boost solinoid and had that open to the air it would boost to 0.6 bar. If you got one with a stiffer spring the minimum boost level would be higher, it depends if the car is tuned or not, if its standard I would just go with a standard replacement

An uprated version would be something like this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Turbo-Actu...item19c4d4050c

Or for a huge amount of extra boost:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Turbo-Actu...item1c1b1338b5

It seems that the lowest pressure one you can get this the one below - 5psi is a usual pressure for a spring on most turbo cars, I would also suggest putting up a wanted thread as there might be someone who has a good used one for a fraction of the cost.

Standard replacement (it seems, although I don't own a 2.0 turbo)

Cheers mate,

So if the standard one is 0.3 bar and I was to fit a 0.6 or 0.8 bar that would up the boost pressure?

Not that I'm going to, its just so I understand more.

It would raise the mimumum boost pressure the car would have, basically what happens is that the boost solinoid controls the amount of air that goes into that wastegate actuator - it uses vacuum and boost to control if it opens and closes. To get higher than the spring pressure the boost solinoid basically takes some of the boost out of the line that goes to the actuator so it boosts higher than the spring pressure.

Here is a good video, bit you might want to know is at around a minute

It is not as straightforward as that Neil.

Depending on what engine code yours is T3?...... although your standard boost figure will be about 8.7psi if you wind in the actuator rod or fit a higher than standard actuator diaphragm the ECU may not let that extra boost happen......what you will see on the boost guage is an increase then suddenly it will be reduced to the standard boost figure.

They don`t tell you this when buying one but the only way to get over it is a remap which removes this standard boost measurement.

The max. on these is only about 12psi so a lot of money for not much gain.

Your better off just getting the proper machine, a T4 which is between 11.6 and 14.5psi depending on gearbox and the pre 2000 have no restriction on upping the boost as the pistons are forged.

These things are done by Volvo to protect the engine to go above them then it is entirely up to oneself.

On side of cam cover at LHS of the engine when looking at it from the front. It will read B4204T*, the "*" being another digit.
