V70 2009 won't start, key stuck in ignition
Hi,
I had very little problems with my trusted V70 2.0D over 6 years of ownership but yesterday I've experienced an issue to which I can't find a solution online. Let me explain what happened. My wife drives this car to work every day. Yesterday she left house, got in the car, started as normal and drove to work. After her shift finished she went to the car, opened doors with remote, got in the car put the key in ignition and pressed start button. All she could hear was clicking sound and car would not start. She could not remove key from ignition. Then she called me. I thought: dead battery. We called Roadside assistance Chap arrived 3am with battery booster and tried to start the car. Nothing same clicking sound. He loaded car in the truck an brought it to my house. He didn't do any troubleshooting As it was 3.30 am I decided I will deal with it in the morning This afternoon friend came with jump leads as I thought this must be dead battery. We tried to start it We connected the leads gave it few minutes and I tried to start the engine. Nothing. Clicking sound, key stuck in ignition mode, ignition error on the dash (circle with ignition written across) key would not work, couldn't stop cranking (I heard clicking sound) I disconnected jump leads and removed wire from negative terminal on battery. Clicking stopped. I connected wire back to battery and it allowed me to remove the key from the car. I've removed battery to charge it. I have tried 3 chargers: 1 ctek 3.8A, 2 from Lidl 3.8A and 5.0A Battery is not charging but it is displaying 12.4V. None of the chargers will allow me to change mode. I will take battery to nearest Halfords or Kwik Fit tomorrow to test. Battery is less than 18 months old, it's Varta silver F18 Car Battery > 85ah 800cca, I've ordered it via internet and seller is asking for battery test. Question is, will I be able to test this battery if it is not charging? What can be wrong with battery? Why it won't charge? Has battery been damaged by something? I've talked to few workshops and everyone has different suspicion. Bad battery is most common. Others include loose ground wire, bad connection on battery teminal to shorting alternator and dead starter motor. I can't understand why it would not jump start. Can bad battery be causing this? I was hoping I will find someone with similar issue on the forums but can't find anything. Any suggestions what might be wrong here are very much appreciated. |

Hi,
Start with the basics, clean up the battery terminals, (wire brush/wool, and something to protect them (Vaseline?), check all the fuses. The fact your showing 12.4 suggests the battery is low but not unreasonably, it’s also too high to suggest you’ve dropped a cell entirely though. What voltage are you seeing across the battery when you try to start it? If it’s not dropping more then 0.1/2 of a volt its probably not trying to crank thus the issue is more likely a sensor (something is telling it not to crank) – look for a member with VIDA If its dropping way down (< 10V) then either the battery is goosed, or something is sinking the current, With limited tools id hazard a guess that if the starter is sinking the full current of a good battery and not turning it will get hot and quickly, should be warm to the touch after a burst of trying to start. Either way start with basics, Terminals, Fuses. Keep an open mind and work with what your seeing not what you were thinking at 3:30 am

last year I had the same problem.
I left the doors open all day whilst cleaning the car and the next day when trying to start it, it had no power to crank the engine. I put the charger on overnight and thought no more of it. Next morning although showing changed it would not turn the engine over. I thought it could not possibly be the battery as it was charged, however I replaced the battery and it worked perfectly ever since. I've never experienced anything like this with car batteries before, it's as if it was working one day and then completely unable to start the car the next. Still puzzles me to this day Maybe there is software in the car that recognizes the power in a battery and then refuses do play ball until it's replaced. So yes I would get another battery I think its finished(and try for a refund on the old one)

Check this thread about a crack leading to the positive battery terminal: https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showt...ghlight=france

Hi
Turned out battery is damaged in some strange way. Won't take charge at all. Strange because it's VARTA silver 85Ah, 800A, max18 months old and I just a month ago did 3000mile trip to Europe. Supplier of original battery refusing to exchange it even though it's been tested by 3 different places all tried to charge it and all confirmed something is wrong with it as it is not taking the charge. Anyway, Alternator is providing 14.2V, with all possible electrics in the car switched on. Can't measure current as misplaced my clamp meter. Will see how it goes. Only issue after battery was out of the car for few days is that windows do not go up and down automatically after pulling switch to the end and mirrors do not fold every time when I close the car with remote but will sort it.out on the next service |

Press and hold the window buttons all the way up and all the way down for a few seconds after, that’ll sort your windows out. They do that after the battery’s been disconnected.

Have you checked the ignition switch? I'm experiencing sudden shut offs of the car (2010 V70 2.0D), with all warning lights coming on, tachometer goes to zero and engine stops. Like I turned off the ignition. If I try to restart, the engine is just cranking, but no start. If I take out the key, and back in again, the failure resets itself, and engine starts as normal. Until it stops (after five minutes or the next day, total random). Both the local Volvo dealer and an independent Bosh shop have diagnosed the car, but with no luck. I have come to believe it's the ignition key switch/module that is faulty. Could that be your problem too?
