Default XC60 rolls forward before break applied?

Hi,

I have a Volvo Xc60 Edition T4 Auto, Year: 2019 and it's my first Volvo, I had VW Golfs and Tiguan before this.

My Volvo does a little unsettling thing whenever I stop and turn the engine off that my previous cars never did. If I come to a dead stop the parking break doesn't come on and when I turn the engine of and take my foot from the break it does a little roll forward before the break comes on.

It's only a tiny bit of movement but it's a bit unsettling when you don't expect it or when you're parked close to another car or object.

In my VW cars, when you come to a dead stop the parking break applies immediately and the car doesn't move.

Is this just a standard thing with Volvo or is there a way to change this within the menu settings?

P.S. I know there is a parking switch but this hasn't had any effect on the situation.

Sounds like your handbrake isn't engaging, and therefore the car is rolling until the prawl is engaged.

Does it roll after you apply the parking brake, or are you expecting the car to apply it for you (which it isn't doing)?

Sounds like a typical automatic.

If I come to a stop and lift the (P) button then the parking symbol appears and it doesn't roll.

In my previous cars there was a option to make this automatic so it would just apply itself once you come to a full stop.

It sounds like it's working perfectly as intended - if you don't want the car to roll, apply the parking brake :-)

You need to have Auto Hold turned on by using the switch with a capital 'A' in the central tunnel console. The green light on the switch should illuminate.

When braking to a stop on a downhill or uphill gradient - depress the brake pedal a bit harder before releasing to ensure that the car does not roll at all.
If you switch off the engine when the car is stationary, the parking brake is applied.

My my24 XC40 B4 does exactly the same. I agree that it's a little disconcerting when parking on a slope as I do. My last 4 Volvos all had auto brake and auto transmission and none of them did it. I'm learning to live with it.

Isn't there a setting in the menu on the sensus cars to enable the engage parking brake at engine off feature? I have it disabled so mine does exactly what yours does on purpose, so the rear pads don't size to the discs after a rain or when parked up for long periods. My T8 rocks a little forward or back until the gearbox locking pin engages in park.

The VW DSG gearbox has a tight tolerance before the locking pin engages so it would be less obvious on those models if the handbrake didn't engage.

It still engages on mine if I leave it in drive and turn the engine off knob to kill all power rather than pressing park first, but on a T8 it has a different gear selector so you probably can't cheat and try that trick
