Default V70 D3/4 163bhp 2011 aux belt tensioner

Please can anyone help me in my confusion:

108,000 miles was the right time to change my aux belt tensioner and belt (the service manual says the timing belt was changed at 90,000 miles and they "may" have changed the aux tensioner at the same time, but I'm not prepared to risk it...). On burrowing my way into the side of the driver's side wheel arch I discovered that the tensioner looks nothing like the one in my replacement kit from Gates. I have now researched thoroughly and realise it is a hydraulic tensioner with a 19mm "nut" attached for relieving the tension (see pic). On further research I have read that it should have been replaced on a recall. Is that right? Other threads on here say it was a replacement for an earlier "exposed coiled spring" type tensioner. Which is correct? Will Volvo still do the work if I go to them?

Engine number is 916171, which, I have now discovered, means it was built with a hydraulic tensioner. I am confused as to whether I can just replace it for a new tensioner of the same type (as Volvo seems to tell me to), or if it needs to be updated to the later enclosed spring type with block drilling and tapping, etc. Volvo won't do it for free now as it wasn't safety critical.

What's the consensus? Stick with the hydraulic type and just replace it? Bite the bullet and get Volvo to upgrade it at vast expense? Does anyone know what this costs? Or sell the car...?

So, you can't buy a replacement hydraulic tensioner. I have searched the UK and Europe. There is one available from China, but that's a no no for me. Looks like there is no alternative but to do the upgrade, or have it done...

Hi,I have just bought the car a couple of weeks ago.
Only has 83k on the clock,i now have the same problem.
I could not find out very much on the net.
I did contact a volvo dealer,he was prepared to sell me a new version £120,but even knowing i had the old style never said i would need a mod to engine to make it fit.
There has to be something wrong with the old ones? as this seems a bit drastic.
Not sure what to do next.
If i find any i will buy two.

It MUST be replaced by what is in effect the Old original type and the Aux belt then has to be changed at every 54000 miles ...
This was a recall and no reason why it is still not current , has the dealer looked up the details ? this should have been done 10 years ago , so poor servicing ... the cylinder block needs drilling and tapping for a new mounting hole , The volvo repair kit must be used as there is a jig and special tap used to ensure the thread is exactly 90 degrees to the block for obvious reasons .. you only get one go at doing this properly or the block is scrap .

Thanks for that bit of info.
I have tried find any info on a recall, nothing so far.
My nearest dealer is aware i what to change the tensioner,i have sent an email today to find out, i will see if he comes back with a recall.
Also mentioned leaky wind screen(another issue)
I am not doing well with first Volvo, only had it a month.
Gorrilla tape 40mm black across the top of the screen/roof no leak now and to be honest it look like it should be there!
Cheers

I think you have inherited someone else's neglect and problems ...
those two faults should have been sorted 8 + years ago .

Got a message from volvo today, old style seems to available now!hydrualic.
Funny how they have found 1 now, after saying they where no longer available £90.and the fact non genuine are also not available.
I will see what i get!
Maybe they should not be selling me this, but a cheaper option for them rather than recall the car at their cost.
Cheers

Interesting development , they were deemed dangerous to the engine when the recall was launched around 2011 , a considerable effort was made by volvo to modify the cylinder block to fit the original mechanical tensioner back on all the engines with a hydraulic tensioner .

What happens if it fails, with that dealer pay out £10,000 to have a new engine fitted? I would clarify it with them before you go ahead .....

No hydraulic tensioner!
My local volvo now say it was a mistake by there apprentice to say one was a available.
Its going in wed to get engine drilled etc £350 inc belt&new type tensioner.
Thought it was too good to be true.
Service says had it gone for is third service with volvo they would have done the drilling/tapping part of it for nothing.
It was serviced by volvo twice 18k&40k and was told the belts etc would have been checked then, why did they not alter it then? knowing these tensioners could develop a fault.
4/5 recalls from april 10 to dec 13.
Could i have a crafty service manager at volvo when i take it on wednesday.
Or am i paying £350 for belt and tensioner fitting, and the other works will be free.making my car exempt from a recall as its been done?no reclaim.
Trading standards are now involved?
