Ok, so I backed up all my contacts out of Outlook, deleted them from the iPhone, entered a single contact with a single phone number, and the car phonebook listed that number. I then added an address to the contact on the iPhone, and the contact disappeared from the car phonebook.

It looks as if the car software doesn't like any fields other than phone number fields to be completed. It may be that it doesn't even like some of the phone number fields, but that will take further investigation. The rather frustrating solution, if I want to have my phone numbers listed in my car phonebook, appears to be to duplicate all of my contacts, have only the phone number in one occurrence and the remaining details in the other.

Is this a phone bug/firmware problem rather than a car problem though? It might be worth experimenting with other phones , friends , relatives etc ...

My HTC Incredible and Palm Pre both sync perfectly. Their phonebooks also contain loads of info...addresses, multiple numbers, DoB, Facebook names, etc. My car handles all of this with no issues. I think you can check the FW version of the bluetooth SW on the car via the menu. I'll have a go tomorrow and let you know what version I have. You maybe need the SW updated on your car bluetooth module.

I've just checked and my bluetooth version is 05.07_R. If 05.07 is a date, that could certainly explain it!

Sorry to hi-jack, but is this a Volvo OEM part or something? Just picked up a '05 V50 today and would like to hook up my iPhone. Can it stream music too using A2DP, or is it voice only? thanks
