to show the correct location, instead of using the one for a LHD car followed by text explaining that it is actually not always there but possibly on the other side. It only involves changing the poistion of the "2". The way it is now could easily lead to a search on the wrong side.

Bumping this thread as I'm wondering if a steering lock is the issue I am having with mine.
On Friday it wouldn't turn over, but could hear a clicking noise. It's in the garage at the moment, but they have yet to diagnose it. The Volvo assistance on Friday though said he thinks it's the starter motor. Funny thing is that I had my steering wheel lock replaced only a couple of months a go after the car wouldn't start so wondering if it could be something to do with that. I really hope it isn't the starter motor because if it is I have been quoted £740 which includes 3 hours labour!! |

Just had exactly the same fault with my my2016 D5
Parked it on the drive on Friday and it was fine, went to start it on Sunday morning and nothing. Just a slight click from somewhere under the bonnet Called Volvo assistance who sent a guy out within 20 minutes He tried two jump packs on it to no avail Recovered it to the nearest dealer, who identified a faulty steering column lock That was replaced under the Volvo Selekt warranty, but when they came to program it, they couldn’t communicate with the car Turned out it needed also new VCM (Volvo Communication Module) Once that was replaced (also under warranty), all was well Hope it never happens again, as it would have cost £2200! My warranty runs out in two weeks time! |

Steering Lock Failure
Yes I had the very same problem 3 weeks ago my MY17 D5 PP wouldn't start.
It took Volvo assistance 6 hours in total to recover the car. This was a Saturday so the car didn't reach the dealer until Monday. The Steering lock was replaced at a cost of £508. Luckily my 3yr extended warranty covered the cost. |

Add another here - in the last week.
Exactly the same faults as listed. Logging so others can see how prevalent this is. |

I have also suffered from this failure, seem so be a common fault on early models.
If you have no warranty in place then it’s unlikely Volvo will contribute towards the cost. |

That is a decision for the service manager not us ... no harm in discussing it with him .

I've had this twice on two occasions. Only a few months apart. Both occasions would not start and needed recovering from my work place.
First time it was the steering wheel lock which needed replacing. Second time was the starter motor that failed. New steering wheel lock was about a £300 job and the starter motor £750!! Bloody cars, great when they're good and real bad when they're not. Hope you get sorted Edit; see you got it sorted. Steering wheel lock seems to be a common fault then. I've never had any goodwill from Volvo and I've asked few times Last edited by ThomasC91; May 21st, 2022 at 07:39. |
