Default B5234T3 Block Swap

Hi all,

Just recently picked up a 2001 V70 2.3 T5

Car has some pretty bad knocking when running, and my immediate thought is rod bearing failure. It doesn't phase me as I wanted to take the engine apart anyway to get familiar with the platform, so am in the process of looking for another block.

However I've been told by a friend that the diesel blocks (he didn't specify which litre) are identical to the 2.3 petrol ones. Can anyone please confirm or deny this?

Only reason I ask is that there seem to be a much larger abundance of D5 blocks around, compared to the 2.3 T5.

I'd be keeping all other accessories and likely the head too, so it's only the block I'd be needing to get to fit.

Thanks in advance.

Not sure if identical or not, but both engines are 81mm dia bore. All other V70 I think are 83mm dia.

A dealer should be able to compare part numbers for you.

Cheers

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the response.

When you say that they're both 81mm, is that the 2.3 petrol and all the diesel blocks? Or just the 2.4 D5 for example?

Best,
Edwin.

I was looking at the V70 brochure I had from 2002 when I bought my T5.
IIRC all the diesels are the same engine size, additional power ( from 163 to 185BHP) was a result of software and minor non- block related changes ie injectors.

I still think a dealer would be able to give you a better definitive answer.

I tried to make some sense of part numbers in VIDA but the blocks strangely are not listed as separate parts so I could not compare the part numbers.
Both "blocks" ( T5&D5) are shown as a two part block the lower part being a "cradle" affair for the crankshaft.

Good luck.
Cheers
Bob

Hi Edwinke,

Did you manage to get the answer about the diesel block compatible for B5234T3 petrol engine?
I'm planning on doing a rebuild of my engine for my V70p2 since it's eating oil when I'm too needy with the throttle. It is also my daily so I would like to gain some time in gently rebuilding a block and swap it as soon as it's ready.

Many thanks in advance for your time.
