Default Nightmare on xc60 Street

Ive owned an 2016 xc60 D5 220 hp since it was a year old. It was pretty faultless for the first 6 years. Its a low milage (35000) car. We were driving back from spain in 2023 and hit a dip in the road which caused a bounce. The. The abs/ esc failure light came on the dash. The car drove home and i phoned my mechanic to have it checked. The light disappeared within 100meters of driving.
He told me to keep an eye on it and that was that. On the way back to spain it did the same thing, dip in the road abs/ esc.
Again it disappeared the next day. Then on the return journey back to france where we live it did it again, dip in road and abs fail.
The mechanic put his obd reader made by launch on it and got 2 codes back ;
B11D453. CEM lost contact with PBM.
U012100. PBM parking brake module general failure. We agreed to have the car booked in and i drove it home. Then something interesting happened. The message changed to “ city safe service required “
A bulb turned on in my head as the car had 6 weeks till its french mot. I asked the mechanic to book the car in for a french mot as a service message was not a fail and if you checked mycar abs and esc and city safe were all still on and not disabled anymore.
The car passed its french mot. He tested it again. Now as well as all the others we got this lot;
U041568. Algorithm based failure closing velocity module
B11D453 low speed collision
P163568. Tyre axle out of acceptable range algorithm based failure
U041568. Algorithm based failure invalid data received fromABS module
C003407. Right hand front wheel sensor mechanical failure
P029900. Turbo underboost
It was the gift that just kept on giving. And we now had algorithmic errors too for good measure. Wheres the headache tablets?
So my mechanic realised this was getting above his pay grade. He rang his auto electrician and also told me to call volvo france to have them diagnose it.
Just incase pixie and dixie were dining out on my wiring, I checked the area behind the dash with a boroscope. No mice.
But theres more. I decided to change the car batteries incase the 8 year old batteries had something to do. I may not have reset the battery management module correctly but it doesn’t explain what happened next. I used the ignition in position 2 then disconnect the battery sensor for 30 seconds method on utube. But the autoelectrician will do a proper job.
So im driving to the airport with my wife and on the way back i encounter a french person on the wrong side of the road talking on her mobile. This is at a roundabout which made it more interesting So i swerve and abs / esc decides to visit me once more.
I invested in an obd reader - mucar cs5 which is ok to check. I checked before we left for the airport and no codes. Yes and the ignition was in position 2 before the test. So i stopped for a valium and to test what codes appeared and i got this lot;
C003407, P029900, plus,
P229368 fuel pressure regulator 2 performance algorithm based failure
P02E168. Diesel intake airflow control performance
P061168. Fuel injector control module algorithm based failure
U041568 invalid data anti lock braking system control module algorithm based failure
U012100. Lost communication with brake control module
I reset the codes and drove home with a funny throttle which had a life of its own and a sensation the rear brakes were binding. This lasted for 500 meters then the car stabalised.
At home i tested again and got these.
C003407. Right front wheel speed sensor failure
U041568. DEM differential Electric module invalid data algorithm based failure
U012100. PBM park brake module lost communication with brake control module.
So the auto electrician is checking the CAN bus network, the wiring, the modules, the sensors. We also have a new sensor to check apart from the rhs front sensor and that is the “steering angle sensor” which according to a uk volvo specialist takes out the esc which one half of the message.
He has one week to,play with it then it is going to volvo france. Amazingly they dont use vida dice as because there are mostly volvo franchises that are also francises for other makes the yearly 50000 euro volvo for vida dice would get a bit expensive if you also have to buy the other 4 or 5 cars you have a franchise for. They will probably use a launch or similar.
They do not have permission to do the work as they have a reputation for just changing expensive bits. So of they come back with we changing all the sensors and all the modules for good measure its going to the uk where they have a more balanced view and should find the problem. I will keep you posted. Ive read all the posts about the rhs front sensor but there is some funny stuff going on with my car. It could have a turbo underboost problem and its strange this failure came after the mot where they rev the nuts off the car doing the emissions test. Maybe faulty or dirty sensor, a crack in a manifold or a leak. Lets hope its not the turbo. The car flys if you put your foot down and theres no black smoke. Maybe Harry potters driven past an cursed it. Who knows. Ive got a nice new bottle of cognac and i think i will have a cry into it tonight. Got pick my wife back up from the airport tomorrow but i will be using her audi.

Thought so. You might be better to share your story on the forum for the old shape XC60 as more people will be there to help you. We have plenty of expertise here, but generally directed towards the SPA cars.

Do you know. Every time i post something i get this problem of it being the wrong forum. I am not posting for solutions. Ive got that in hand. Its for the share. We all own volvos. In my opinion they are basically pretty much the same. There are differences sure. But something they all have in common is that they go wrong spectacularly sometimes and thats what has happened to mine.

Shares are welcome, but its helpful if what you share is posted in the right section. That helps people find what you post.

For example, someone looking for repair info or information on an older shape XC90 wouldn't be looking in the SPA XC90 section That's why there's sub-forums on here.

All the same, thanks for sharing.

On most modern cars continual new codes are often a warning of impending battery failure.

TBH hitting a bump and errors coming up can also be a loose earth lead.

Computer with wheels, doesn't like an off-perfect power supply.
