Default Can I use 5W30 A5 motor oil?

Volvo V70, 2.4d
D5244T5 engine.

The proper motoroil for this engine is 0W30 A5B5, but I do have some 5W30 A5 oil. Can I use the latter oil?
Also,-what is the difference between A5B5 and A5 classification?

I've been googling, and as far as I understand it A5 is for petrol engines and B5 is for light duty diesel engines,-so A5B5 covers both engine types.
Which leads to the question;-which properties makes an oil suitable for diesel engines?

No idea, Emtor, it is a science onto itself. You will receive all kinds of opinions with regard to what you can or can't use but, especially as you are in Norway, stick to the manufacturers specification and you won't go too far wrong. Once those temps start to drop you want exactly what has been recommended...your battery and starter motor will thank you for it.

Some bedtime reading here: 0W30 or 5W30

oils suitable for diesels usually have additives to try to help the oil stay cleaner

That's interesting, Simmy, as most modern oils state they are suitable for both petrol and diesel which would make for some exceptionally clean petrol engines. Surely a factor in keeping emissions down...?
