Some people have been okay with them and not had too much trouble, but some have had costly repairs due to their known issues with oil consumption and EGR problems. It wouldn't be a chance I'd take personally... I wouldn't buy a VEA. I'd still go for the 5 cylinder 2.4 euro 6 (if that was required) or a euro 5 or something with the 5 cylinder engine if ULEZ didn't matter. Alternatively, if they weren't options, I'd buy another car. I won't have a VEA Volvo... No chance. No offence to anyone that does, of course.
The Mk 1 XC60 had VEA engines on 2WD D4 models from MY2015-2017. On Geartronic, you also got the new 8-speed box (AWD cars remained with the 6 speed).

Something to be aware of with the 2010-on 5-cylinder diesels is that they (along with most diesels of that era) use a Bosch CP4 high pressure diesel pump, which is prone to grenading itself with very expensive results if starved of fuel. It's not likely...but...extremely expensive if it happens...so...
1) Get the fuel filter changed on time (40k miles, I think)
2) Make sure the fuel system is bled extensively when it's changed
3) Don't run it out of fuel
4) Don't put petrol in it.

If you're sensible, you'll be fine. But I was not sensible...and the bill (well into four figures just for parts) still makes me wince.

cheers

James
