Default Overheating rear brake

MY nearside rear wheel and brake is getting exceptionally hot (hot enough to turn water from the hose to steam when I went to wash it). I suspected it might be the handbrake dragging, as I adjusted the cable two weeks ago, but having slackened this off the problem remains.

Car was MOT'd was Friday and the brake test does not suggest any problem then - there is the same amount of drag for both left wheels (17KgF) and only slightly less (16KgF front, 15KgF rear) for the other side. All four wheel exhibited significantly more drag at the last MOT (~20KgF). All the discs, pads and shoes have been replace in the last 12 months.

think the mot test has found/caused the problem, applying the handbrake on a rolling road will find a loose handbrake shoe that might have become dislodged/unbonded ,usually the callipers and pads don't seize.reqs striping to check.

At the last service the garage commented that there was uneven wear in my rear offside brake pads. I can't remember exactly what it was - a runner guide that had seized, I think; they took it apart and greased it up and it now works fine. Might be worth someone looksing at your s with a view to doing the same?

Thanks to you both for the replies.

Given that
a) I cleaned the wheel yesterday and it's covered in brake dust after 30 odd miles
b) The outside rear pad is exceptionally worn

I concluded that the slide pins (I suspect that is the "runner guide" you eluded to) were at fault. Stripped the brake down, and indeed they had some nasty black c**p on them, cleaned them off and greased them - just off for a test drive.

Update - That's not fixed it
Update 2 - Garage has had a look at it, caliper is seized.

Oh dear, sorry to hear that - that was the worst case scenario I was given but I seem to have gotten away with it so far.

Half hours labour and they've freed it up - but it did cost me a new set of rear discs and pads.

Same here - but I've not had a problem since (15k miles) so I'm happy

Disc had been seriously overheated and gone orange round the edge. Garage recommended I change it.
