What's this part for?
Another of these really irritating questions to which several people will know the answer:
The controller of thought, word, deed and finance found a rubber cover where the Valdez is moored overnight, bearing the following legend "VOLVO 3526000 F7527 2", but I don't know what its purpose in life is, except to prompt stupid questions on the forum.

A picture would help.

A rubber plug from the bottom of Valdez's cargo bay perhaps?

It looks like a cover for something important - photos will follow once I've extracted the camera from under the locomotive boxes in the work area.
Dimensions-wise it's 2 1/8" by 1 5/8" by 5/8" with an arch-like cut-out in the underside that looks as if it should be covering a bolt head or something. It doesn't look like a grommet or blanking plug, more as if it should be protecting something else.
