Default Cambelt change on B21 Carb Engine??

Hi, I was wondering when the cambelt is due for the B21 Carb engine? its a 1977 Volvo 245 DL.

I've read that it is either every 36/40k is this true? Do i need to relace just the belt or the whole kit i've seen you can buy

your help would be very much appreciated

Nick

If you don't know when it was last done, get it done for your own peace of mind, get the kit, then you dont have to worry

What's the kit?
The only other component is the idler tensioner. Just spin it to see that it runs easily and quietly, and clean off any stuck on rubber gunge.

1977 volvo.

Is it possible this is a non-interference engine?????
In that case-- a broken cambelt is un convenient, but it will cause inter engine damage (valves).

The changing of the cambelt is not only indicated by the mileage it has done.
Also a time factor.

Change cambelt XXXXmiles OR 5 years , whatever comes up first.

It is a non-inteference engine, as are all B21/B23 units; the B200/230 series units are mostly non-interference with the 4-valve and Heron Head units being interference.

I used to do them at 35,000 miles, as that tied in with an oil and filter change at 5,000 mile intervals.

The job's easy - Mike Brace (Red-Block Guru) put up a "How-to" in the forum.

Yes, nothing untoward happens if/when it breaks; I broke one and the engine just stops.
Also, dead easy to replace being SOHC.
Frank.

I had always thought it was every 40 thousand miles or four years?..at the moment i am only doing 3 thousand miles a year..soooo my belt is due for change at a measily 12 thousand..I did read in a recent thread about the five year change..how did i miss this important imfo all this time and running two red blocks for twelve years!!..well as they say.."you"re never too old to learn that you can get another year out of your belt!"..cheers hj.

I think it also depends a bit on what kind of mileage. Remember that the stress on the belt will be less at high revs and greatest at low revs, because of the inertia effect of the revolving camshaft.
I read somewhere that most belts break at idling speed, which is why sometimes only minimal damage is done even with an interference engine.

But all the same, a broken belt at dead of night in the rain miles from anywhere will be no fun. (Unless you are Mike Brace - half an hour job by torchlight. )

Also on the B21 the crank pulley is easy to remove.
