Default Urgent Engine Service Required

Only bought this car 6 weeks ago and it's been driving great. But drove to work early this morning, first really cold night (-4 when i started the car). Started fine, drove off fine but after a mile or two, in 4th or 5th gear a very small hesitate in driving/acceleration, then continued as normal. Two or three miles later a bigger hesitation/hickup while accelerating normally and above warning appeared on dash and engine in limp mode.

So I stopped the car, turned it off and restarted a minute later, no problem... untill a couple miles later when it happened again (in 2nd or 3rd gear this time).
Turned off, restarted and continued gently for the remaining 15 miles to work, no furhter problems noticed.

I'm to drive back later today and think I should hook it up to the computer at my mechanic (volvo indi) anyway but any ideas anyone?

Cheers,
Bjorn

If it's a D5 diesel - try fuel filter.

Default S60 D5 diesel

Thanks, it is a diesel indeed. Is there anything I could see/notice wrong on the fuel filter eg dirty or cluttered? I will order it and exchange.

Besides it being cold I just realise it's been very foggy also so could something have gotten damp in or onto it causing the hesitation? Or could it be something else?

You won't see anything and they aren't expensive but should regularly be changed. Mine went into limp home mode several times after a short distance. Dealers said mine was the 5th they'd sold that week and that was when weather changed to cold - i suppose it makes sense as diesel will be slightly thicker............don't go lighting fires underneath engine though!!!!!!

Mine did exactly the same today, it has these spasms which just go away after a day or two. I don't even worry about it any more, I just stop the engine and restart and it's fine again for several weeks.
I'm certain that it's due to shortage of fuel supply because a new filter reduces the number of times it happens. Maybe it's a bit of water or muck in the tank just pushing it over the edge.
But don't panic into throwing money at it straight away (apart from the filter of course)

Happened once on the way back to home also. This morning, good bit warmer 3 degrees instead of freeze, 35 miles to work no problem whatsoever.

So I will order the fuel filter and replace, hopefully this will solve the problem in colder / foggier weather.

Fuel filter seems always to be everyone's first response to change . Many have cars that have never had it changed and the difference it makes cures many issues .

It's very DIY if you can get under the car

If I remember rightly, the recommended service interval on this filter is 160,000miles! A bit too long, I suspect.

Yep, I would go along with the above, and change the fuel filter ASAP. If it has the same filter as my 03 S60, I would take the little drain screw off, and just see how much crappy brown water drains out before you remove the filter unit.
