Default 1st start is hard some times

Ok nother problem I need help with, some times my volvo v70 tdi has problems starting in the morning, I get some gray/white smoke out the back but it will fire into life if I leave it 5 to 10 mins. Today I decided to see if there was any codes and there was, just 1

EFI-742: Comm Failure between MSA 15.7 ECM and AW 50 42 TCM [or possibly Request for MIL lighting from TCM]

I have cleared the codes now and if it happens again will see if this pops up, but what does this code mean?

I guess the MSA is some thing to do with the fuel pump/timing

TCM is? Main controle unit for the engine?

Could there be a wire lose or something?

Pump timing is out ... next to no one including Volvo themselves have a clue how to time these...
You will find some dynamic timing drivel on here but there's only one way to set these up properly and that's the proper way as recommended by Bosch via a Dti.

I did think it might be a timing thing so I did a timing check, but I thought this would happen every day but it only happens once aweek maybe.

But what about the dtc or should I just ignore?

Well fired up the test and the car started to run really lumpy but the rpm went up to 1100 white smoke out the back and it was claiming 600° out??

I have no idea what your talking about with those figures. You can't check pump timing on an App or any software.
Dti and pump lift needs to be between.53 and. 57.Sweet spot is around .55.

Grey smoke is unburnt fuel.

Right vol-fcr claim it can time fuel pumps, 850-obd2 claims it can as well, I have both but that info came from 850-obd2 will check vol-fcr when I get home

I believe Vol-Fcr should work with MSA 15.7 and it's probably the usual way these are timed. But as Rudi Dudi says, they can be set up perfectly well with a dial gauge. If you are unfamiliar with dial gauges and the workings of injector pumps, using the software and reading the values off the screen is an easier and possibly faster proposition.

I'd agree with Rudi's diagnosis that the pump timing is a bit off. It doesn't need to be out by much to affect starting, emissions and performance.

I'm fortunate that where I live, the local Volvo dealer can and will still time these engines and there is a good independent who can do it too.

The AW 50 42 TCM is the electronic control module for the automatic transmission (TCM = Transmission Control Module? ) It sounds as though there is a problem with the engine ECM not communicating with the transmission. I'd look for any damaged wiring possibly in the vicinity of the transmission as a first step.

Hope this is of some help

Had a little talk to my local volvo specialist and they don't do this any more.

Any way hooked up fcr this morning after I warmed the car up and its say it 650° out....... fired up itp-obd2 and that is saying the same thing, so both are working I think. Well that's 50° difference form yesterday could this be a slipping pully?

any ways I will take a look this weekend when I got time

Before you do anything, do you know when the belts were last changed ?
Pump belt is 40k I think and no point in trying to set the timing with a worn belt.

Might be worth looking at "Diesel specialists" in your area to see if they can do the pump timing ? TT Automotive near me did mine on my old tdi.

There is a guy on here PNUT....hope you don't mind....that could sort you out, but he's about 70 miles from you. Top man on this stuff.

Good luck................
