Default 2006/56 V70 D5 6 Speed Auto Transmission Fluid JWS 3309

Hi all, not new to the site but it has been a while. I used to be a member many years ago when I had my S60, but unfortunately Ive been unable to reactivate my old account hence the new account.

I've recently purchased a 2006 56 plate Volvo V70 D5 6 Speed Auto with 134k miles and the gearbox is doing some slightly odd things.

When the engine and box are up to temp and Im going up hill under load, I get a thud on up and downshifts. Also the same when stationary when going from P to R and into drive.

I've no history to prove the geabox has ever had a service so thats my first port of call.

I've wacthed a few videos of Sump Dump and fill methods to replace the fluid bit by bit rather than a mega flush which could cause more issues.

My questions are as follows:

From the threads I have read I should be using JWS 3309 Spec fluid and a lot of people seem to recomend Mannol 8218 ATF Multivehicle JWS 3309 Fluid. I think this is mainly due to price. But the posts I've read appear to be from a number of years ago when Mannol was much cheaper.

What Transmission Fluid would you recommend for me to use? (Brands and links would be very helpful)

Should I be changing the Transmission Fliter also? (I cant seem to find any videos of where this is located or which filter to use)

Is it a must that I need to reset the geabox using VIDA or DICE? (I don't own either software so will be unable to do this myself).

Any other handy tips and information on the above would be a great help.

Thanks to all.

there are no serviceable filters on the geartronic gearbox. there is one inside but requires a full strip down to access it. also worth checking the pnp switch if its bumping gears they can wear and move out of position clean the electrical contacts on the switch.

I would go for the Mobil JWS 3309 on the older car as that is basically what would have been in it from factory.

Why is that? What is the advantage over other JWS 3309 fluids?

I'm currently using Millers Millermatic ATF SPIII-WS in mine with the same gearbox; looks like this is now superseded by their XF Premium ATF MV-EXTRA.

I replaced my transmission fluid this weekend. I bought the fluid via ebay from Smith & Allen. Their products seem highly regarded from research various Volvo forums. It cost £100 for 20 litres.

Only because there are more deals from many sellers who stock it.

By way of serendipity here's a 'barrel end' that's cracking value

That first Millers oil above. I got 15 litres of that for an Aisin box in my Renault. No problems. On the spec it gave the JASO classification. I have heard that some oil blenders are not listing JASO spec now as the Japanese were charging big money for it. When you look at the latest Millers oil XF Premium, the JASO has gone from the can.
I have to ask why oil like the millers can meet the ZF spec LT71141 and also meet Jws3309, yet we are advised not to buy the latter (Aisin) oil and put it in a ZF box specified LT 71141. Nor to put LT into our Aisin Volvo boxes. Esso LT is a fully synthetic auto transmission fluid with all the specs of pour point etc etc so close to Aisin 3309 that I wonder if it matters. Many many US drivers put Amsoil and other fluids in their boxes. Fully synthetic for modern auto transmission. Maybe in this case it all we really need? I have Aisin WS Fluid in my XC 60. I think it is basically a slightly thinner version of JWS 3309.
