timing belt query
I am trying to replace the timng belt on my 1982 244 2.1 auto. THE NEW Belt, a gates 5020, seems too small and i cant get it over the tensioner even though its retracted and held in place with a pin. Can belts shrink if old and stored a long time? Should i try a genuine volvo belt. ? Advice most welcome

if the tensioner is held with a pin then it is not retracted. You need to lever the tensioner back and use the nut to hold it retracted
belt part number is correct |

Ignore classicswede, if the pin is in, it's retracted. They're always a bit tight to get on, sometimes it helps spinning the crank by the crank bolt a bit. If you can get the edge of it on, then spin the engine slowly and simultaneously guide the belt by pushing it towards the block just before the pulley. Regards, Henrik Morsing

I find it's easier to get the belt over the camshaft sprocket last rather than the tensioner.

Hello. Thanks very much for your advice. Just getting it retracted that little bit more did the trick
