Exclamation 2004 V40 sounds like a diesel

Hello,
My 2004 V40 1.8I I4 is making a diesel sound. I tried to look if the problem seems to be the belt, but it sounds to me like the diesel sound is coming from inside the engine near the belt. The car starts and idles like normal (rpm-wise), working temperature is never above the middle. The sound seems to start kind-of randomly (always sounds like diesel when starting and idling, only sometimes makes that sound when sitting in traffic).
What could be the problem?

If it's the 1.8 volvo engine & sounds like a cyclic "Brrrr.... Click" type of noise coming from the top of the engine near to the timing sprockets, then it cold be the VVT sprocket/pulley making the noise ??
