Default Maps update licence key / Sensus Update

I've just inherited my late mothers XC70 14 Plate as she has recently past away

Sat Nav - Software Version is 1040 & Maps version 30.15.02

I tried to do the update & it says I need a licence key - I contacted the local dealer and they're saying it should work, when I got them to actually read the email,

they're £75 + licence cost

When I ask them to check giving them the above versions, in case it needs a Sensus update:-

they said it would need "investigation at £150" first!

Anyone got any suggestions

The nearest other dealer is two hours away (I'm in Aberdeen and Dundee has same company so Perth)

you are supposed to do it yourself, download the full Europe map to a 64 gb memory stick then insert that into the USB socket in the centre console

That's weird. never seen that in my duties updating the maps.
Your dealer needs to send a technical report to Volvo not charge you £150 and get nowhere.

Is there a chance you downloaded the wrong update? Is there a different version for V70 and XC70? Did you select the correct region your are in? I would re-download it and try again.

I have an early 2014 V70 and also get prompted for a licence key when I attempt to update the maps. Is your system the Sensus 2011 or the Sensus Navigation 2014 which I think came out later on in 2014? My car is on a 2014 plate but is the Sensus 2011 system.

For the 2011 Sensus system, as far as I'm aware (and I think this is covered elsewhere on this forum), you may need the software update that allows USB updating of the maps without a license key. I have been informed that there have been instances when the software updated has caused terminal failure of the infotainment system and Volvo aren't interested in footing the bill for replacement. My local Volvo specialist steered me away from the software update as my maps are only one version behind the final version and they have encountered the failure themselves, albeit rarely.

I have considered this option - https://www.satnavishop.co.uk/volvo-...2020-726-p.asp - but for £99 I'm not sure it's worth me updating to map thats that are already nearly 4 years old with no future updates being released.

You could install this and do away with Sensus.

Basically just re iterating what Cudrefin has said, easy way to tell what system you have,

Does the car have the a button with a globe on, on the main centre console? If so you should be able to update it via USB.

If however it does not have the globe button then sensus may well need a software update before you can then do the map update. My 2014 S80 and our XC70 have this version and both require the update it will work via USB. I have never bothered as Volvo no long update the maps. The latest version is some years out of date by now anyhow.

I also was warned of the risk of bricking the sensus system from a dealer’s experience.

The will be no more map updates for the old Sensus system so it's hardly worth paying for the software update that allows you to load updated maps as only the last one which is already 3 years old, will be relevant and that's out of date.
