Default Who refurbs differentials?

The diff on my 1966 Amazon has a lot of backlash which makes driving uncomfortable (every time I lift off: clunk!). Does anyone know of a company that will refurbish it (or part exchange)? Someone once told me that it is not possible to reshim the diff to remove the backlash but don't know if that is true or not.

Preferably in NW England but I could take it anywhere.

Thanks

why not take the back cover off and see exactly where the play is ... it could be in the axle splines or the sun gears could be worn that is much more likely than the gears themselves wearing, backlash of the gear teeth should be about 0.005"

Check the rear prop UJ. Check all of them but the rear one going south is the usual one that gives problems. Best to check with the prop dropped away from the diff.

Is there thrust washers in the diff? If so, that's a wear part which can cause clunking.

Think he’s closed the workshop side of the business.

I have a guy that does them for me but he is slow and not cheap either.

This place could be worth speaking to https://www.mandttransmissions.co.uk...erentials.html

I have not used them but I know someone who has and said they did a good job for him

Thanks for all the replies. I checked the UJs and they appear tight but I can turn the prop shaft back and forth into the diff. I will try contacting the place suggested.

Have contacted three diff/gearbox specialists and they all say that they do not touch the old stuff.
Brookhouse suggested UK Axles who do a fixed price refurb (a high fixed price!).

I will have a look at the insides (as suggested) just in case there is something simple I can do myself before melting my credit card to UK Axles.
