Does the roof mounted dog guard collapse forward on impact creating a barrier?
It could but the seated occupants would get hit by it as well, they are really easy to remove.

As far as I am aware there is no dog guard or netting...everything went in piece of cake...all the mourning etc are already in the car and the plastic trim pieces show you where to cut to allow for seat belts to pass through...so now I have done this what do I have to do next...i know I need an internal door catch then what....when I bought it I insured it as a 7 seat as that was always the plan as I have four kids and sold my Toyota Lucida to purchase the Volvo and rear seat conversion so that side of things I should be fine....what else am I required to do to be able to keep plod happy?

Expect the best, prepare for the worst. Will the occupants be able to get out forward or aft under their own steam and will people outside have access to them even with no power to the car.
I don't know what the official requirements are but I would want to be able to open the gate from both sides manually, car unpowered. It could be worth looking into a tailgate swap with a breaker - they don't go for much even if the swap is not on.

Going to rig up some sort of manual cable pull from inside the boot I think
